>>36773658I don't have anything against Sonic but I feel it's inevitably just a part of a bygone era, there was a brief time of cereal box mascots being spammed in the 90s because console games were mostly thought of as being for kids, but those generally all petered out except for Mario which basically totally cornered the kid's market.
I dunno if kids today like new Sonic games but I guess they might? The thing is what made Sonic work back then was the wacky colorful graphics and cool synth-y music and, for some reason they've been trying to put Sonic characters in realistic-looking worlds with real-world-sounding-music since Sonic Adventure. It feels like Team Sonic was torn between wanting to just demo the Dreamcast's graphics and make a Sonic game and IMO it just never worked. I thought it was ultimate cringe even when I was like 9 years old hearing Sonic, Tails etc start walking around a realistic-looking setting talking (and I talking a lot) to realistic-looking people all mishmashed in. Shit was just totally unlike before. Mario never had such a jarring transition and that's why it still works, etc.
