There isn't much story to speak of and the combat is just Pokemon Stadium's combat with sprite graphics. You just travel along screen-sized mostly linear routes that take you between points of interest, with puzzles or quests to clear to proceed towards towns, where you do another puzzle or quest to unlock the Gym, then beat the Gym Leader to advance. Occasionally there are mountains or tunnels to cross, and various metroid-style environmental elements you require specific keys to interact with.
