>>42358098This meta comes from several things combined - Japanese streamers on niconico often are anonymous regardless of whether they're a vtuber or not. Kizuna was the progenitor of the entire thing and was entirely a written character and kept in-character when did actually-did stream stuff, kayfabe was always part of the format from the beginning. Mito, who popularized live2d streaming, also kept to kayfabe - guess what, she probably -isn't- actually a 16 year old JK inchou. Then Hololive came about also generally in-character and then also incorporating idol elements on top of that to boot.
In context of all these facts no it's not weird that you're expected to play a character doing this, IMO. You can "be yourself" if you want but IMO the avatar is kind of pointless then and actually it's more cringe to me to say "this IS me" while looking like some stupid googly eyed thing than to play into the preposterousness of it all. Like pic related basically is the type of faggot that strikes me as. Just fucking be your actual self then when streaming if that is what you wanna present, why make a character if you do absolutely fucking nothing with it other than to hide yourself being ugly as fuck I guess. On niconico many streamers there just are a voice over a game with no cams, the notion you must have a camera on your face in your shitty room is a twitch thing and it's not like there's a real reason it has to be like that.
