A lot of games are paid for by the last games sales. If starting out, they usually get loans to pay for the first game(s) unless they were rich to begin with. The latter is rarer but does sometimes happen, a lot rarer these days given the effort games require to look half-decent in the current era of gaming, even 2D games require quite a bit of work to compete with the crop of great indie and 2D corpo games.
Films, likewise, live and died by VHS, DVD and Blu-ray sales. Hell, some TV shows did for a while until scumvertising took over every fucking TV channel to the point even the poor cablefags were getting plastered with ads.
