just take a normal chessboard, pawns have their usual moves, but for every piece that can move in an extra direction, give them the ability to also move up/down by the same amount (basically switching from moving along XY axis to XYZ axis)
but since there's no board "above" or "below", those instead come from past/future board states from the perspective of your current one
overall the main thing to worry about is not having your king getting attacked from "above/below", so you need increased awareness of board state changes, which is already a high level chess staple
