Her keyboard has soldered in switches and not hotswap so this is the one mod she can do without having to get a desoldering kit.

A lot of keyboard mods are like this to change the sound signature of typing on it. This is among one of the simpler and more effective ones next to the PE foam mod which has you put a sheet of PE foam in between the pcb and switches that makes it sound like you’re dropping marbles as you type.

In actuality it’s cause people like customizing things they use on a daily basis or making stuff based off of things they like. There’s a pretty big overlap between weebs and keyboard autists. Lot of keycap sets based off of anime and vtubers even. Legally distinctively though.

Nowadays these keyboards are fully programmable with open source firmware editing so you just switch modes or something with a combination of keypresses to get a numpad layer if you need it. Most people don’t use the numpad on a daily basis so TKLs are the most popular.
It helps with desk space.

Yeah numpad for numbers is just common sense. I actually learned to use one pretty late but it's a massive advantage to type numbers quicker, and without having to look or feel around.

Yeah, that’s fair. I used to insist I needed a numpad too but found I didn’t need it nearly as much as I thought I did when I switched to a smaller board so I stuck with it. I still have the same functionality when I need it with a keypress combination though. That said these are called custom keyboards for a reason. No two keyboard is going to be the same because it’s meant to be customized to your personal preference. I’m sure there’s some crazy fucker out there somewhere who has theirs set up to type in l33tspeak on default.

I dunno, I just ended up learning how to touch type on the number row. Maybe I just haven't worked jobs with insane amounts of number entry, because any possible timesave from the numpad is lost by constantly needing that hand on my mouse to navigate the mandatory Access GUI. Plus, I'm overwhelmingly more used to laptop keyboards and their typical lack of numpad.

Having said that, I'm willing to bet the real reason why custom keyboards are overwhelmingly TKL or smaller is because...they have far fewer switches/caps to deal with when building and rebuilding them. Less work, and especially for switches it saves a sizeable chunk of money (caps are usually sold as sets for full size keyboards, so you rarely save money there).

The feeling of the keys, the travel lenght of a key press, the distance between your keys and looks of course.
It's just one of those things you can unluesh your autism on and people outside the hobby wouldnt notice the difference. Same with cyclist saving a few hundrered grams of weight on their bike or a car guy replacing an internal part with carbon fibre etc etc.
Just something that is only interesting to yourself and MAYBE some in the same hobby

it's nice if you don't go too deep into it, kinda like just building a pc. Instead of hoping to find a keyboard with everything you want, you build it yourself, and then if you want to change things in the future it's easy to do without buying a whole new keyboard. And it's not that much more expensive than a good prebuilt mechanical keyboard.
The real autism is in those going really deep with custom lubes and mods and all that stuff.

I don't think the PC comparison flies.
If you're just a normie interested in videogames there may come a point where you go "I should build a PC."
You go do some research, order parts, follow a youtube tutorial to completion and you got your PC.
There doesn't really ever come a point where somebody with a PC goes "Huh the actuation time of my keys is .4 seconds to slow. I really should build a keyboard."
Most just go "I like when it goes clickity clackity."
Not to knock anyone's hobby. Live and let live.

I'm glad I built my own keyboard, helped my soldering skills, runs my own customized version of the qmk firmware so it's fully programmable and is super comfy for stuff I use like emacs and blender.
I don't understand the people that build a bunch of near identical 60% boards with expensive keycaps, though, that just seems like consoomerism to me.
