You load game and now you have to handle everything: relationship with factions in your country, relations with neighbors, trade, economy, religion, military. Once you figure it out it becomes easier, in big part because Paradox UI team is god-tier and you have all information you need to make your decisions. But the initial overwhelming feeling is what likely scares most people away from the game and why some people never get into them. I had same happen with HoI3 where I booted it back in the day, saw UI and noped out of it before I sat down and figured how the hell research and chain of command worked. Rimworld feels much less overwhelming. 3-5 people to manage, most actions don't cause immediate feedback from other things, you can pretty much progress at your own pace very calmly unless you enable harsher settings.
