This site has NEVER been a bastion of free speech. This site has always been a place for the mods (and at the time, moot) to cause drama and shit stir when they are bored. Still happens today.
The only reason you get to shitpost right now is probably no mods are even awake. This has always been a "problem", mod dead hours. Janitors barely changed anything.

Most of this site were in trips and names for a solid 5 years on almost every board.
The only exception was the cancerous shithole /b/ that was forced anonymous in 2005-6 to appease a weeb fuck that tricked moot in to thinking "it's totally cool bro like 2ch does it!!" (it didn't, and still doesn't, and in fact has forced IDs and has done for most of its life)
