On a sidenote: It was cute when people kept asking for the name of the game she flawlessly responded.

I mean, most children stories aren't really happy, at least originally. They are meant to teach lessons to children, not just tell a happy story. I can't speak for Japan, but a lot of the kids stories in the west are pretty dark if you go back to the originals from Grimm, HCA, or Aesop.

Red Riding Hood is about not talking to strangers about personal information, Little Mermaid is about not changing who you are for someone else, Pied Piper is about being good on your debts, etc. and all of them have pretty dark endings. I'm no psychologist, but I assume dark/sad stories help to impart lessons better than fun/happy ones.

Being a gut feeling fear is a lot more powerful at teaching what to do or not to do, because the consequences for not following the line is doom. Btw the lesson in that story is to learn to let somebody go and that even if it sucks for a while and you won't be the same person ever again after that you have to keep moving forward. In fact the boy ends up not killing himself and goes on to become a doctor to prevent other kids to have a parent die due to preventable things
