during their first year they basically had one collab with -400 chemistry and couldn't even talk to each other with how much they didn't mesh, after an offcollab where they tried, they are just now "cordial" so they can pretend for the camera, but they still have done shit like request separate segments from each other for a few events and they basically have zero rapport with each other

They've already made it clear that they are the Exodia of Hololive and don't have as much of a "gen unity" as the other gens.
Aqua hangs out with Startend and a few others.
Shion hangs out with Aqua, Gura, Okayu and some others.
Ayame hangs out with SMOK, Miko and Fubuki.
They meet up like once a year, and are only slowly building up their "gen unity".
also most of them just wish privately if they aren't too close to each other

The real issue is that gens were not really a thing until the 3rd one. Gens 1 & 2 not only had nothing in common, but they had no reason to mingle together. It was fine for gen 1 since it was a bunch of extroverts (let's ignore the menhera issues), but everyone in gen 2 is autistic except for Subaru who can get along with almost anyone.
Another obvious issue is that most girls in gen 2 just don't stream. Well, it has been getting better lately, but you can't really foster gen unity when three of the girls barely work on their own to begin with.

-Korone and Okayu are actual friends.
-HoloID gen1 are friends that lived together at one point.
-Coco and Kanata were friends that lived together, they might just be casual friends now.
-Polka help Nene off stream with her mental, casual friends at least.
-NePoLaBo are work friends.
-Haachama are work friends with Luna and Watame. Miko tried to be Haachama's real friend but they were too different, still Miko managed to get Haachama's line number and was the only one who was able to contact Haachama outside discord during her absence
-Flare and Noel seem to have actually dated a bit but broke up, not sure what they are now, since it seem to be an actual relationship rather than kayfabe they don't share much.

I remember actively searching for early-Gen collabs after someone pointed out how they only started really pushing the cohesion gimmick with 3, and the only example I could find of 0 was, suitably enough, only technically even a collab in-retrospect. They all just happened to be online whilst Sora was streaming Minecraft & trickled in gradually.

Idk what’s up with KanaLuna behind the scenes but they seem really close now after Rust happened. I think Gen 0 had two main goals: consolidation and easing AZKi into Hololive "proper" since she lacked visibility outside her singing. Considering it achieved those goals easily, we can call gen 0 a success.

They are definitely closer than that. They've talked about doing shit together off camera plenty, like hanging out in discord watching horror movies together or making recordings together when they meet up for dance practice. Also, their live event went way past 'work friends', considering of the 22 songs total they each sang a single solo apiece, while the other 18 included all of them, even going so far as to have them all participate in choreo even during duets, so they could all stay on stage together.
Aside from that, I'd also put Bakatare Circus as actual friends, based on several recent events.

Gen 0 were put together as they were figuring out the industry, they are close enough to each other because they share that "unexplored frontier" that their kouhai didn't, they're all vets

Gen 1 was when Hololive was still just hiring as they went along, they're kinda similar to gen 0 but not enough that it really is something they all have in common, I guess they're just more professional (like their sempai) and thus are able to do group events more often

And then there's gen 2, they just flat out don't care for some reason even after 5 years

Manjigumi don’t care about anything besides themselves and playing fps with dudes (only one who hasn’t been caught is aqua).
The only way you can interact with them is by tard wrangling them to oblivion (like marine does with shion and aqua, and mio does with ayame) or by begging them (like lui does with ayame) and even when you beg you’re still prone to have them cancelling the collab last moment.

I think you got mixed up, its Watame and Kanata that seems to have beef with each other. Kanata's recently gotten close to Luna and whilst they don't seem as close as during the ORIO times, still friends and hangs out with Towa albeit its important to remember they have conflicting interests/focus on their content. Watame meanwhile has done performances with Towa and occasionally interacts with Luna due to their overnight streaming schedules. Meanwhile, you'll rarely ever see anything going on with Watame and Kanata together.

Gen 2 is weird, their "leader" is Subaru but she's more involved with stuff like OKFAMS than them. Even Gen 1 is pretty unified thanks to Fubuki being active there despite also being a Gamer

Kinda. Aqua was too much of an autistic gamer, Choco was a slut, Ayame is a woman, Subaru was a normie any inkya will hate, Shion is oddly the normal one.
They mellowed out nowadays though and begin to rebuild their unity although rarely shows them cause each already had their own circles. You could say they matured, especially Subaru and Aqua

Talents didn't meet each other before debut until gen 3. Gamers is a special case because the members were all effectively nepotism picks. Mio signed up to hang out with Fubuki and management made them a duo, then Mio brought in Okayu who brought in Korone.

Gen 1 is basically a collection of veterans. They don't seem to really get along but they're very loyal and still do formal unit stuff plenty even though they don't collab casually. I'm not sure all of gen 2 has even been together for anything since the first holofes.

Gen 0 is a happy accident where the members have no business being together in the first place but just inexplicably happen to get along
Gen 1 is a bunch of strangers forced to band together to survive and mostly just share the same experience of getting fucked by the early days of hololive being a joke company
Gen 2 is a bunch of antisocial people that didn't really try to mix to begin with
Gamers is nepo gen and all the better for it since they came prepackaged with synergy
Gen 3 is fucking Gen 3
Gen 4 is when your mutual friend invites you all to hang out but then has to take an important phone call and you're all awkwardly passing the time with questions between long silences
Gen 5 is like Gen 1 again, only with a casualty that brings everyone closer together
Gen 6 was a mad science experiment designed to recapture the glory days of Gen 3 but then the creations escaped and struck out on their own, cycling between allies and enemies depending on their needs at the time
