I can understand her. Not approve, but definitely understand. Imagine being a shy, introverted, autistic person who has had trouble with human contact your entire life. You just can't deal with people and it always ends up wrecking you. At some point you land a great gig, where you can mostly work by yourself in your room and make good money. You get comfortable having 4 remote coworkers, because they are all more or less playing a character like you are. You start thinking of some of them as friends.
Then you meet them.
All the trauma of the past, having to deal with various "kinds" of people come rushing back at you. Your so-called friends... they are exactly those types of people. The bullies, the stacies, the social ones, the backstabbing ones... You are in a rat's nest, you always were. You can't escape, or rather it makes no sense because it's a really good job. What else will you do if you drop this job? Everybody knows who you are now. But those people, my God. You start drinking more and more and hating yourself and your job more and more.
