You can reject his reality, but he refuses to back down so you have to fight him. You're basically choosing between having a reality where nobody is sad and everything is seemingly perfect, but people don't grow and have a special yearning that they'll never be able to awaken to. Or you fight for the actual reality where bad shit happens all the time but it's the truth and people are allowed to fail and struggle. The characters are fully aware that their reality has awful things happen in it, but they choose it anyway because it's the truth and they have to accept it even if it is bitter.
