I'm pretty sure it's far simpler than that. People who stream want to grow and succeed. For girls, avoiding male collabs only makes sense if they want to grow and gain gachikoi. It's not fear: it's just avoiding something that makes fans leave. It's no different from avoiding games that your fans don't like or even avoiding collabs with other women that your fans don't like.
I disagree fundamentally with the idea of fans trying to gatekeep their oshi's fanbase. It's up to the streamer to decide who she wants in her fanbase. If she wants to avoid pandering to Unicorns, literally all she has to do is announce that she isn't Unicorn friendly Day 1. Obviously the reason why most don't is that they know they'll take a hit

People won't really have much expectations for an indie out of the box, right? An indie who is friends with other male collabers is pretty clearly sending out a clear message, too. However, compare that to someone debuting in Hololive, where a large number of girls don't collab with guys. In that case, people will sort of assume that there will be extremely limited male collabs.
On the other hand, someone debuts in VShojo under a new model. You'd probably assume they're going to collab with men.

Fundamentally, there is a difference between having a preference that your oshi avoids an activity versus having a preference that your oshi partakes in an activity
It's easier to avoid doing things than to do things. Secondly, Unicorns tend to gather around girls who are usually not currently doing male collabs, so those fans with a "preference for collabs" more often than not are trying to change the status quo to suit their own desires, which is its own massive issue (collab begging, bringing up other streamers in chat). I mean, there's a reason most Vtubers have rules against collab begging and mentioning other streamers: it's undesirable behaviour
