As a fan for 4 years now I can understand almost everything without going back to relisten (though I stopped reps a year ago and now just consume content) but she still loses me sometimes when she goes machinegun mode or uses some jargon. This is with maybe an hour a day of active grammar/vocab anki on average and a shitton more of listening to streams while mining vocab for 3 years. I started out only getting a vague idea of what's being talked about, and I had already been learning (though using some shitty methods like duolingo or dry kanji grind) for a year or so at that point, not counting more than a decade of anime which was maybe marginally useful
