My situation is sort of similar but then I try and think about what I'd actually do with the membership. My time is limited as it is, maybe I'll see a vod I don't have time to watch.
The icon next to your name is neat but, eh. To be honest with how many people are members to their streamer now it's easier to find my name in the chat room as it scrolls by because my name has a different color than most.

I never get any free memberships ever, its a huge meme. I've gotten one literally only once and it was during a stream I had never even watched.

I was in the same boat, I didn't want to nuke my brand account and lose my comments. So all you have to do is click on your icon in the top right, go to "Switch Account" and "Add Account". You can make it a duplicate with the same name and icon if you want, and it will be free to gobble up gifted. It will have a different @"accountname" but it is well worth it for the free gifted.

There's basically three criteria:
1) Opt in (the toggle is global now)
2) Interact with channel recently (they give watching as an example, this is probably the most dubious criteria on what counts as recent interaction)
3) Have a non-branded account

I membered to everyone I care about. I wouldn't watch some random membership streams because of a lack of time and emotional investment. It would be weird when a chuba starts to vent or get chummy with the chat, and I'm there but not even part of the community.

If you really want to become a member, you're better off buying a membership. If you rely on someone else's generosity, prepare to be disappointed because the chance of receiving a gifted membership is extremely slim. Given Youtube's lack of transparency regarding the exact nature of gift distribution, I wouldn't be surprised if Youtube internally blocks certain users from receiving gifts (ex. ad blockers).

Sometimes I am watching a stream with 100 viewers and some insane person gifts 100 memberships. In a situation like this, my chance of receiving a gifted membership would be 100%. That's why I'm so annoyed today, because I missed out on a gifted membership I certainly would have gotten.

Gifted subs are actually distributed amongst all people who are subscribed to the channel, sometimes you don't even have to be in the chat/stream and still get one

I recently got gifted a membership when I wasn't even watching the chuuba's stream. I have never typed anything in her live chat and I wasn't a long time subscriber. So I guess you don't actually need to watch a livestream to receive one.
