This hand right now has 3 blocks, 778m, 34p and 1244s, since you need a pair and 4 sets, you try building 5 blocks. For example, if you get a 3s in that hand, you get "2" blocks from it, 123s and 44s. Once you have 5 blocks, the hand is a lot clearer and you'll be able to go for whatever is fastest,highest value or safer.

You can go pretty far playing aggressive in bronze/silver rooms. People in those rooms have bad efficiency and no defense so you can just keep quickly winning low scoring East games. They also will tend to build low scoring hands, so basically you can just beat them at their own game. But you will get punished for it once you move into gold.

There's a good chance there will be another Phase thing again in the future imo. Apart from that there's a circle of Twitch vtubers who play. Rezuul recently hosted a vtuber tournament, I imagine he will do something like that again.

When you chi/pon, all tiles involved become locked into that set of 3.

Also you need four sets of three tiles and a single pair. The only exception being 7 pairs and 13 orphans, both of which must be closed.

Saki is alright as a show to watch with cute girls jonging, but the jong in it is a bit of a meme. If you want an anime that actually covers gameplay, then check out Akagi. There's also an anime airing right now called Pon no Michi, but I don't think it has proper subs at the moment. Which reminds me, I'd recommend getting subs for Akagi/Saki that are done by the UnderWater group.

Akagi is not really the best for "mahjong gameplay". Almost every match has a gimmick introduced that changes the game and the story arcs are more about mentaru than theory.

If you think Akagi is a great source for gameplay, there's no reason to dismiss Saki because Saki's the same with the regular mahjong + cheat skill gimmicks and everybody at the table playing around them.

Learn basic tile efficiency.
Always fold against riichi unless you can get into tenpai on your next draw.
Against open hands consider 3 calls to be in tenpai.
2 calls to be in tenpai if they have 6 discards.
1 call to be in tenpai if they have 12 discards.
fold against cases where they may be in tenpai unless you yourself are in tenpai.
For now always call riichi in tenpai unless there's only one tile (amount not type) left.
In that case try building another wait.
If you need further clarification feel free to ask for it. This is what I've been focusing on as a fellow adept and its been working well.
