If it was all localized internally they could've just swept it under the rug. But if outside parties, namely business partners became aware of whatever transgressed, they it obviously wouldn't be possible to sweep things away and just give her a scolding.
Many things have been theorized as to what could have possibly have happened to cause Cover to act this way
off the top of my head
>if Mel told say, "Kunt" that X merch deal was going on at X price and Kunt went to the merch maker and tried to get a comparable deal and the dealer gave them a higher price Kunt could've gone "but you're charging Cover corp only X!" etc
or potentially
>Mel tells "Kunt": my company's got this major deal coming up and our stock price is going to shoot to the moon! Also the other company's going to do well too and Kunt, being a Kunt, went to the other company for confirmationin either case the partner company would contact cover to ask wtf is going on and how the hell did some third party hear about whatever deal they had going on together.
These are just examples, but you can see how it's the existence of another party/stakeholder in whatever it was finding out about shit that got Mel in trouble.
In such a case Cover can't hide that shit and sweep it away lest they develop an bad reputation and nobody will want to work with them.
