For newfriends / fa/tg/uys: this is a Chronicles of Darkness (CofD) homebrew being played by the fabulous ladies of Hololive English, running under the Hunter: the Vigil module. Lastly, some stuff to think about and discuss:

Athletics and dexterity seem to be too prominently featured in any physical action. I don’t know if this is Calli’s inexperience or just how the game is structured, but Strength and Dexterity could be used in equal proportion with one another. Example, climbing the Hedge should clearly require Strength, not Dex. Meanwhile Stamina is almost NEVER used. WoD veterans, give me the skinny on how useful (or not) some stats are, I’m genuinely curious.

LUCK DICE
Calli has been a little inconsistent regarding her luck die mechanic. Here’s what I’ve observed:
-Calli’s system for the luck die: 0 or negative dice invokes a single special d10. Player MUST roll a 10 or suffer a failure.
-Sometimes players only have 1 die to roll. Example: Watoto trying to climb the Hedge was dexterity + athletics. 2 dex and -1 athletics means 1 die. This should just be a normal success, but she treated this as a luck die. Result: Watoto actually rolled a 9 on this attempt, but Calli gave him a half-success since it was a high roll, when in fact this should have been a solid success. When a luck die is utilized requires some clarification.

One thing I like about the next mission is it will require costume changes. Fantasy settings are most guilty of this but there a tendency for characters to have one costume syndrome. Be fun to see them try to work a social setting with the Malks and some alternate outfit art.

I mean I really I want scout in an evening dress.

Hard to say, teebeeaych. We have an incomplete picture so far. The storytelling in the tutorials was rock-solid, but a single player experience allows for a strong, focused plot. Calli did great on the tutorials, even if it was on easy mode, but I won't take that from her.

The main sessions have an increased difficulty due to having an actual group. With only two so far, it's been mostly good, but there's room for improvement. Session 1 was fantastic, I felt. If anyone read my review for session 2 while it was still fresh, I have to say it was weak in some places, although I have to express some mercy. Calli was reeling from a flight (from the Burgers, was it?), and the party made the irritating choice to split up like a bunch of stupid college kids in a horror movie. Added challenge there, and it showed. Pacing went at a snail's pace due to the split. On the plus side, the party will undoubtedly split up to schmooze about during the main event, so it gave Calli some much needed practice in juggling multiple groups.

A big glaring issue that presented itself in session 2 was information retention. Group (sans Kiara, who has been doing a DAMN GOOD job, hell she even remembered what Watoto's powder did while Ame didn't) seemed to forget what they had at their disposal. Main reason I made these charts in a simple, digestible format. I wish I could get it to them somehow without coming off as a backseating sperg; I know they'll have a better, easier time with the knowledge all at their fingertips.

Tiara's story, acting and talking its so boring , i could barelly finish her tutorial session (that I only did so I wouldnt miss anything later) but it was totally skippable

You cannot be that blind. Amelia's pathologically retarded animal loving nearly got her seriously injured for no reason at all. Watoto was in the wrong. Tiara was correct to try and shoot the vine dogs down. They're monsters AND they were visibly hostile. Killing them was the logical option.

Kiara has been the best player so far. She's taking steps to better understand her merits, RPs consistently, and tries to keep track of her options for every situation.

i am going to counter that and say only from a technical level. her role as a part of the group has been dodgy.
---To be fair: if Ina dried out her wet towel and decided to invest in some Science trivia and some Noir Attitude, she could easily outclass all the other players. she has shown her self to be level headed and capable of reading the NPC's, even if she's misinterpreted a few things.
her soggy wet personality olds her down.
---Gura could be an amazing Roleplayer, but she's rando as all fuck and hasn't quite clicked on how the game is played.
---Ame is pretty hopeless. beside Wa1010 and that one firebreathing incident her decisions have either been GM-assisted, or total out of touch with the game atmosphere.

As many as a GM can handle. Personally I think 4 players is just fine for them to have their own time to shine and not being a clusterfuck of people trying to interact with each other and the world. Some GMs can handle 7 or 8 just fine and I envy them, that shit ain't for me.
One cool way a GM can handle a big group of players is through Troupe Play, where characters share a common base and rotate when needed, since there's no long-running storyline that has to have the same characters hard-locked as protagonists.

Agree. Ina has the best potential. She just needs to throw off her timid little Asian introvert shackles a bit more, but that brush with death really spooked her hard. She's both scared to shit of making critical mistakes and the most vulnerable member.

I don't really know what to do with her. She's totally bipolar in her decisions, they're either remarkably good or abysmally stupid. She is definitely the weak link of the group, but I don't want to write her off too quickly. She has an amazing streak of creativity; unfortunately it really vanishes whenever she's in a group. I get the feeling she has performance anxiety.

well, any WoD would be familiar to the team and the channel/enterprise as a whole, but if i wanna be based, i'd say they play Everyone is John as a warm up, then do a campaign of either Cyberpunk/Call of Cthulhu Modern (J-style)/Dark Heresy and then graduate to a final campaign of Unknown Armies or Delta Green... esp. w Gura. she has recently shown she has what it takes to serve the Emperor.
Then again, i have no idea where these players think they are headed.

I don't know the system well, but athletics and perception rolls definitely took center stage so far - considering the setting and that the character are Hunters, that might just be an intended part of the game (even I'd prefer skills to be balanced when they cost the same).
Stamina is rarely rolled for, but since its central for determining the health stat, it's not too irrelevant. In the end, the kinds of physical feats you roll for usually require an in-the-moment stat like dexterity and strength rather than Stamina because they rarely take longer than some seconds. I guess you could argue Stamina is a bit "passive" compared to its peers.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not familiar with WoD at all either, but I enjoy learning the system since HM got me interested in the setting. I'm not dumping on Calli's homebrew or WoD itself, just trying to stir some convo regarding the deeper workings of the game. I'm no stranger to questionable balance regarding stats and skills; one of my favorite games is Morrowind, and everyone who's played it all know what a trainwreck that game is with its skills (literally a million unique long swords vs. two unique spears, but hey at least it HAS spears, thanks Todd).

From what's been hinted so far, the dinner party is going to be stealth and social oriented, so mayhap we'll see a different breed of checks being thrown at the party. I really want to see Tiara make use of those 3 Empathy points, but if their tutorial sheets are anything to go off, this mission is gonna be a rough one. They'd better remember to burn some willpower.

It's mostly just the setup of Calli's game and how the girls are choosing to deal with situations. They're doing a lot of running around and scrabbling over things, so Athletics is coming up a fair bit. They could opt to sneak around, which would be Stealth, but they don't so Stealth doesn't really come up. The Dex thing is mostly just Calli seeming to default to that for physical tasks, but I couldn't tell you why she does it.

Yes, so climbing is a Strength + Athletics pool. But Stamina not being used mostly because of the first point, but also partly because of how Attributes are split up. You have a 3x3 grid for Attributes. You've got Mental, Physical, and Social Attributes, much like you do with Skills, but then you also have Power, Finesse, and Resistance Attributes. Each Attribute is two of each, and all 9 cover each combination. Your Physical Attributes are Strength, Dexterity, and Stamina, with Strength being Power, Dexterity being Finesse, and Stamina being Resistance.

You can think of Power as your ability to effect the world in direct and forceful ways. Strength is used to break or move objects, for example, while Presence is used to bully and coerce in unsubtle ways. Finesse on the other hand is your means of subtle interactions, and your ability to react to the environment. So Dexterity plays into agility and delicate tasks, where as Wits governs how you think on your feet and your general perceptiveness. Then Resistance is all about how you deal with what the world throws back at you. Stamina comes into play through sustained effort or overcoming physical hardship, but Composure is for emotional control and your poise. So, as you can probably see, Resistance Attributes are less active in their utility than either Power or Finesse Attributes are. This doesn't mean Stamina doesn't have active uses, it's great for stuff like foot chases, lifting objects, or holding your breath. It's just that it happens to also be used for a lot of things like not passing out when you get the shit kicked out of you, resisting torture, not succumbing to exhaustion or disease, as well as determining Health.

All Attributes and Skills are equally useful in the game. Not every Attribute or Skill will be equally useful in any given chronicle though. So even if Politics never gets a roll in Calli's game it's not a bad Skill, it's just not a Skill that's going to see much use. That's not a bad thing, it's folly to try and make everything equally useful all the time. Generally how you handle it is you tell your players a bit about the general ideas of your chronicle, so they know the sorts of things that will be broadly useful, and then when they've made characters you try and work in their specific skill sets into the game. If no one puts points into Animal Ken there isn't much point trying to make that skill really useful, outside of what it would add to the game to include animals in the first place. It's good to have solutions unfit for the group, but trying to do it for everything all the time is a nightmare.

It's not her mechanic, it's just core part of the game. They're called "chance die" and any time you're reduced below a dice pool of 1 your roll a chance die instead. It's just 1d10 where 10 is a success, 9-2 is a failure, and 1 is a dramatic failure. The Watoto thing was sort of a mistake. Can't really remember how it went down but have 1 success do the thing poorly is also sort of how things go.

The universal importance of skills like athletics is deeply embedded in most TTRPGs since physical combat is the typical last resort, the only interaction that can't be ignored by regular beings.
In those crucial moments, your intelligence, knowledge, social skills, sneakiness become largely useless and how well you will do, or even whether you survive, is almost solely dependant how well-versed you are in either the fight or the flight response.

How some systems account for that is having skills cost more in terms of XP or similar currencies, but that entails more complexity and numbers - which I don't mind, but the current system is already plenty complex for Mythbreakers, considering how things like merits, initiative-based combat and willpower aren't being fully utilized yet.

I'm glad they managed to wrap up the travel arc last time and can start with the thus far basically unexplored main plot of the adventure in session 3. This break has been so long that both the talents and the viewers will have forgotten the details, but now we just need a quick reminder of the information the group was given in the bar instead of having to focus on what happened last session.

When this project was in its early days there were a good number of fans scratching their heads at Calli's choice of setting, but in hindsight it was a masterstroke, if not entirely intentional (and yes I know she picked what she knows, that's the whole reason). DnD would've been expected; WoD brings something new to the community. Not only that, DnD would've caught the attention of other communities, most notably the Critical Role troglodytes. Say what you will about /vt/, but Huntermyth has garnered a pretty damn positive community, and I have no desire to see it tainted. The handful of Kiara antis and seething SEAniggers are all the detraction we need, teebeeaych.

You can't just argue it, it's a fact of the system's design. All the Resistance Attributes are responsibly for more dice penalties and contested rolls than they are for anything you actively do.

The thing is, you don't need a player character to have 4 dots of Athletics or else they'll be useless dead weight, since you can always burn Willpower to compensate.

Sounds like the definition of a better (maybe stronger/more useful would be more accurate) skill in the context of Hunter (which is the only relevant context, unless you switch games frequently). Like, the best skill would be the one that you can always use and the worst would be one that you can never use. The others lie inbetween those extremes depending on how often they're useful.

Of course that's usually required in TTRPGs to a certain extent, since they have a natural tendency to require certain skills more than others. But in the more extreme cases it might be better to split a skill that's naturally coming up very often into two different ones (or to transfer part of its usefulness to another skill) instead of requiring the players and GM to avoid it and look for alternatives where feasible, just so it doesn't become the obvious choice for everyone. Requiring the skills to be similar across all the different WoD games hampers the ability to design the individual systems around the way they're intended to be used, in a way.

As far as I know for now, she has the situation about her brother, I can see it leading her to change her worldview as it reaches its conclusion, as it happens with plots where a family member is heavily involved, depending on her brother's objective and endgame. As it goes for most RPGs, the usual thing a player character can learn is to trust others, in this case trusting others despite being in a shitty situation of a foreigner in a new place.

The easiest guess is that she'll detach herself from Dr Oopsie and open up a bit to others, come out of her shell and develop some stronger healthier relationships. As Ina becomes more comfortable with roleplaying, I can feel that it'll noticeably reflect on Yuul.

And he's not a complete emotional brainlet, he's shown to be empathic and even chivalrous at times, so same for Ame becoming more comfortable, I already expect him to grow a "simple-minded with a good head on their shoulders and heart in the right place" sort of character.

I can see a bit of Tiara's arc going on for her as well, a countrygirl in the big city lends to that too. But having to take care of her sister will be a bit harder without their parents, that can lead to her maturing faster and be more responsible and level headed. Or at least less of a hot-blooded charging goat.

Only because you've misread. Athletics isn't more commonly rolled for in any game of Hunter than any other skill being rolled for in that game, so long as you have a semi-competent group, its just a Skill that comes up in more chronicles of Hunter. Just like how Politics is a bigger deal in most Vampire chronicles than most Hunter chronicles, but Politics isn't better in one and worse in the other, it's just more likely to feature in any given chronicle. It's a common skill for the gameline, that's all.

Until you follow that logic through and realise it doesn't actually make sense from a design perspective.

And this is why. Lets take a Skill that is bad in Calli's game, say Politics, it's almost assuredly never going to get a roll. So if Athletics is coming up a lot and Politics isn't coming up at all, the way to elevate one is to nerf the other based on that statement. So you make Athletics two Skills, or at least require two Skills to get it's full effect. Now assume what you've done is make those two Skills equal in Calli's game. Now in my game we're playing as VASCU agents and so naturally there is a lot of bureaucracy to deal with. Politics is now being used much more, which according to you is the mark of what Skill is and isn't good. So we've split Athletics up into two things, and neither are getting used much, but Politics is getting used a load. So as you can see the logic simply doesn't track. No game with a Skills system close to worthwhile that I can think of takes the approach to Skill desgin you're talking about. It simply isn't how you make Skills worthwhile. The amount a Skill is used isn't the basis for whether or not it's good, that's how you determine if it's good in a given chronicle, what makes a Skill good is the amount it CAN be used and the breadth of its application. In that regard all are fairly equal.

Didn't suggest you do this. At all. What I said was that players are partially responsible for applying their own Skills, and that GMs need to actually provide uses for those skills as well.

No it doesn't, but it does let all the gamelines work together and allow for broader game types. It's a generic skill list that works for all of them equally well. The only time you need to change the list is for historical settings, otherwise I've never seen it cause an issue. Just because something comes up more chronicles of Hunter features Occult than Politics doesn't mean you don't want Politics to be a Skill. It lets you do more types of games, and a Skill existing without being used is only a bad thing if players dump points into it. But that's not a system fault, that's a group thing.

From the Wyrm, you mean? Most likely not. Every fa/tg/uy doomposter familiar with WoD assumes every favor from the Wyrm is atrociously horrible, but who's to say. Western Euroslurps have such a bizarre outlook when it comes self-defense in general. Due to living in less hostile environments they're WAY more trusting of the state to take care of and protect them. They don't understand how small they are, and smaller populations are easier to provide for, in terms of state responsibility. America is so big, bloated, and "diverse", that shit doesn't work beyond a local level. The optimal survival strategy here is kill first and when the cops arrive just repeat "I was attacked, I feared for my life, I defended myself" ad nauseum till they leave you alone.
