I'm no coward, I'm going to continue rating every Mori song
YOUR MORI
*The Grim Reaper is a Live Streamer
This song has always been one of those songs that I don't actively seek out, yet has a claim staked out on part of my brain. Listening to Your Mori back-to-back-to-back for the first time I'm struck by a conundrum: Do I like this more than Red? The track is a bop, it loosens your neck just hearing it. The lyrics are playful without straying too far into gimmicks. The MV does interesting things with being a lyric video and has some amusing shout outs in it. It's just a good time packed into three minutes. It's fun to listen to, it sounds like it was fun to make, I feel like I've been sleeping on a banger.
*Red
I hadn't really sat down and listened to Red in a hot minute, and listening to Your Mori through in context... I think it hasn't aged very well? Yes it was her first big meaningful song with some bombast, as opposed to Cursed Night which was more introspective, but that's just it. It was her first. I don't dislike it but listening to Your Mori in 2024 and it coming on the heels of TGRiaLS it feels like kind of a drag. She's had better tracks, the production makes the fast rap sections kind of muddy, the lyrics take themselves a little too seriously. It was a big deal at the time but she's done so many better things since then, it feels wrong to say this about a Mori flagship song but it's kind of weak. It's not even the fault of the song, it's just that she's improved so much on the model that it definitely feels like a prototype of what was to come.
*guh
It's fucking guh. It's a shitpost song. If I devoted any more thought to it than this Mori would probably manifest to call me a retard.
More seriously it's a very early, defensive Mori song where she didn't have faith in herself and went for the Eminem gambit "If I insult myself hard enough you have no material" thing. Listening to it in 2024 makes me wish I had a time machine so I could show her her wins and demand she stop talking shit about herself. One meep out of a morp
*Ijimekko Bully
I think this one is the better Meaningful Song off Your Mori, and not just for bunnysuit Mori in the MV. This is still very early Mori music so it has its hitches - coming back to the fast rap in 2024 is still like "okay we get it". But overall the production feels cleaner and more intelligible. This is also the first instance of Mori characterizing herself as sort of predatory, "the hungry wolf", in a way she revisits a few times with very constricted MV visuals. She reuses tight alleys and subway cars in a way where you're trapped in a space with her. This song also has the legendary closing line "Love the me that's killing you." It's like she's coming to grips with the, let's face it, extraction element of vtuber content. If Red was a prototype then Bully is the first floor model.
It feels really fucking weird to rate Your Mori like this but here we go
TGRiaLS > Bully > Red > guh
Putting Red that low feels bad, man, but it's a product of its time.
