Connections have been drawn between it and synesthesia (a phenomenon where stimulation in one sense leads to another being stimulated, for example associating colors with certain numbers when you see them), as well as misophonia (being sensitive to certain specific sounds, like chewing, such that when you hear them you react from anything ranging from irritability to literal fight or flight)
The trigger is different for everyone; whispering and ear cleaning might not do anything for certain people.
