Yeah you CAN just follow the main yellow line, but you'll be disadvantaged by not having a good arsenal of items or spells. In fact, you can forget about doing any kind of magic build if you follow the beaten path.
Then on the other side, the world is so big and vast that almost every time you go exploring, the item at the end is either garbage, useless or not fit for you. So you either waste endless time fighting reskinned bosses in the hope of something useful, or you go though the game with a mediocre build, effectively playing on hard mode.
I love Souls games but ER is by far the worst one FROM made.
