There was a class that the Divinity School offered a few years ago that featured Neon Genesis Evangelion (the original series) as part of its study and discourse on apocalyptic media and modern despair in the arguable end of days. I didn't agree with everything, but it was one of the greatest courses I've ever encountered. That image was featured in the original syllabus that sparked my interest. See here:
