I had a go at that one marisa, it is as I figured a touchy subject with all that hard contrast. As you probably have noticed by now the more painterly and soft the changes between super bright and extreme dark the better they scale. Probably writing a 5% upscale script in PS actions (do they even have those anymore?) might be a quicker way to a solution. HOWEVER PS lacks that one smoothing filter I use a lot and allows me to fudge pixels enough to slip a few images I normally couldn't work with. I have yet to find another app with something similar with the same results. This is where PS will require more set up and patience as you stride through the steps.
