Both are fantastic. The anime is one of the most worthy adaptations of a story, ever. The novels are a somewhat different experience for lack of visual & musical media, plus quite a bit of additional detail.
I watched the anime first, then started reading the novels. I recommend both. If I did it all over again, I wish I read the novels first so that my imagination had set the tone for my experience. Having watched the anime first, the visual interpretation of the animators imposed itself very strongly.
Not necessarily a bad thing, because they did a masterful job ... but, make your own decision for your own preferences.
On a related note, season 3 of the anime is in serious question, in large part due to the lack of sales for the first two seasons. People are demanding a season 3, but the studio is having a hard time justifying the project. Apparently a lot of the "demand" is not coming from actual customers..
