In my experience, humans seem generally wired towards projects. The satisfaction of doing/finishing something meaningful can have a profound effect on your mood and confidence. At the very least, it gives you a reason to postpone thoughts of suicide because you have something more pressing to do.
I'm in college right now, so I'm surrounded by projects, but maybe you're in a stagnant environment with idle hands. Just start by asking yourself what small thing you could fix in your immediate world, and consider whatever comes up. If you feel like it's worth your while, do it, and enjoy whatever crumb of satisfaction it gives you. Every bit helps.
Also, talk to a doc or counselor to see if your brain chemicals are wacked. Getting those situated makes doing what I've talked about way easier. I speak from experience.
