Your only error (other than naivety) was investing a big fat chunk of yourself in another human, the relationship itself isn't the issue it's that you built your identity around it. A person should be your compliment, not your missing piece.
Not saying that would've kept the relationship going, just that it wouldn't feel like you've just had a chunk ripped out of you.
