for a year minimum
not as unusual to do, or as hard to do, as you might think.
will change your view of life profoundly.
if you can swing working in a REALLY different place that would be even more impactful, but you sound young and (no offense) sheltered so anything will be good.
you seem North American, so try living and working in London or somewhere in Europe if you know or can learn a suitable language.
other than that: mostly it's just that you're young, that's all. alcoholic parents are not easy, but it doesn't sound like they abused you, and you say you have friends, sometimes a gf, a roof over your head, and food --- having all that means you're doing better of 80% of the world, so keep some perspective.
it doesn't get easier, but you will be able to handle everything better as you get older - especially if you live in another country for a few years.
failing that, start vilunteering at a homeless shelter, helping illiterate adults, battered women, abused children, etc, and you'll become a more substantial person.
