Quoted By:
Piet Mondrian...
The first modern artist i ever studied when i was about 12...
I was fascinated by his development from traditional realism, through cubism and expressionism, to pure forms.
He was a scientist, a pioneer. A very lonely man. He wanted to work out what was the minimum you could put on a canvas and still raise a feeling or communicate an idea. He was the human embodiment of the Modern movement - its most textbook practitioner. He WAS modernism - but at the time few recognised his genius, his science.
He inspired me to work in the arts. I have worked for galleries and museums, met millionaires, talked with artists in their studios and sold their work for thousands. I am very grateful to Mondrian for leading me into my career, and for showing me that art is incredibly important. It can change lives completely in a glance, even if its just lines and colour blocks.
