I always imagined that the back-story behind this one is that it is the final bastion of human existence. Maybe far in the future, our society collapses from war, corruption, or maybe from external sources like some cosmic event that affects the whole planet. The final humans seek shelter in a desert oasis, a sinkhole that is protected from the harsh radiation of the sun and the cruelties of the outside world.
