>>6851323I tried out i3 and ratpoison on my dektop for a little while. Ratpoison was tolerable, but I genuinely couldn't stand i3. With that in mind, I pretty much refuse to own a laptop that doesn't have i3 or some other keyboard-heavy wm on it.
I think part of the advantage to having i3 or something similar on a laptop rather than a desktop is that the keyboard is right in front of you. I think I tried a few keyboard-heavy wm's on my desktop for a month or so, including i3 and ratpoison, and I honestly just got fed up with it. Obviously, you can develop muscly memory over time, but it helps to have the keyboard in front of you if you're using a keybind that you don't frequently use. Pretty much none of the muscle memory I had for my laptop carried over to my desktop. Part of that has to do with the different feelings the two keyboards had, but also the fact that my desktop keyboard was totally out of my field of sight, making me really disoriented.
Considering how shitty most laptop touchpads are, i3 makes much more sense for a laptop than a desktop to use i3, because you can navigate your computer far more efficiently than if you were just confined to a touchpad/mouse clit. For your desktop, there's much less of a practical reason to use i3, and, ironically, you might just get frustrated at how much more inefficient it is to use i3 on your laptop when your mouse is pretty much sufficient. The only reason to install i3 is for ricing, and, for the record, there are plenty of floating wm's that are just as customizable, so I wouldn't recommend the hassle.
