You seem to be under the impression that the power dynamic is what matters here. If you're convinced that the movement from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a power play by upper echelons of our society, I would be inclined to agree with you on that point alone. However, you must understand that pulling out of the Paris agreement and pumping money into a dying industry (coal) is a recipe for economic and ecological catastrophe in the long term.
Fossil fuels are a finite resource. Global powers that do not seek out renewable energy sources within the next few decades will jepordize there standing as global powers. As the fossil fuel industry collapses the renewable energy industry will rise from its ashes.
As for undermining our democracy. The majority of US citizens according to polls approved of the Paris agreement. So who is really not representing the interest of the American people?
I don't want to assume that you believe climate change is a "hoax," but I will say this. Global climate is being significantly impacted by anthropogenic green house gas emmisions. That is an irrefutable fact. The miniscule amount people within the scientific community who dissent from this consensus are either ignoring published and accepted literature or are flat out fabricating data. In either case their reputations within the sciences are usually tarnished afterwards.
