Why is this?
Because ー and |, while functionally the same symbol, do not have any meaning of their own. What they indicate is "Continue the vowel sound from the previous kana for another beat, before the next kana." In this case, the symbols literally mean...
"Ku" "continue the U" "Ru" = "Kuuru" =~ "Cool"
So their direction is important. They show a connection from the first to the third. In your picture, that is totally fucked up.
