When the RSDLP (Bolsheviks, which would later become the CPSU) came to power in 1917, both homosexuality (and in actuality, anything other than heterosexuality) and abortion (or other reproductive rights) were illegal. Lenin and his cohorts changed the law code, removing laws against things such as homosexuality and abortion, to try and free Russia from the iron grip of the Orthodox Church. If you remember, Chancellor Bismark (a conservative, but also secular and a pragmatist rather than a religious nutcase) did the same for Germany. Bismark also, attempted to loosen the grip of the Catholic Church and Protestant Churches over Germany's society (and education system).
Lenin and co. didn't do what they did because they approved of homosexuality (they didn't, seeing it as symptom of "petty bourgeois decadence/corruption" nor did they seek to normalize it. They thought "socialism" (ie. lower phase communism) would naturally lead to the total elimination of homosexuality/pederasty and that all such homosexuals/pederasts would be cured by socialist society and made into responsible, contributing heterosexuals.
It was not until V. Stalin wrested control of the party (1927 onward) that he reinstated laws against homosexuality and abortion.
Before you start defending Christianity (something you shouldn't be doing), I would remind you that top NSDAP leadership were all atheists (with the exception of Himmler). Herr Hitler and Bormann both intended to eradicate Christianity from the German sphere (seeing it, correctly, as a Jewish ideology that breeds weakness and antiscientific thinking). As for Herr Himmler, he was trying to find a way to re-establish some sort of pre-Christian Germanic paganism, though he failed (since nothing is to be found of pre-Christian traditions) and this irritated other Party leaders.
Hitler had no intention of reestablishing paganism in Germany.
