>>7866522While there were some earlier examples of what became known as Modern Architecture; the movement, later also known as Hi-tech architecture, began to become more widely known and employed from the 1950's/1960's onwards as a response to more traditional labour-intensive building designs and methods, it tended towards more open functional designs increasingly using modern materials such as steel and concrete in conjunction with extensive use of glass, it also increasingly relied upon prefabricated construction methods. Examples of modernist architecture would include the Willis-Faber building in Ipswich, UK or the Pompidou Center in Paris, France
Postmodern architecture first came to the fore sometime in the 1980's as a response to the increasingly overly industrial-looking modern architecture; postmodernist architects looked to use a mix of modern and more traditional materials to create modern buildings incorporating building themes/styles/features from all across the world and more particularly from history. Examples of postmodernist architecture would include the current SIS/MI6 Headquarters building and the former TV-AM studio building, both in London, UK.
