First of all, owning a train is expensive (obviously). Run down carriages start at ~25 grand, going up to 500k for better ones. And don't even get me started on engines.
Problem is, up to a few years ago Amtrak (who's the biggest track network owner in the US) offered to tow your personal carriages at the end of their regular trains, charging around 3$ per mile. They've stopped doing that for (((financial reasons))) so right now you practically can't move your carriage anymore, save for building your own tracks and buying your own engine.
