Sad cope, sounds like someone who is using m*nt would recommend. Its not even close and it looks like shit too. Even IceWM can replicate the style and design better.

t majored in xfeces and wrote a doctorate in i3 at g ricing uni but wish I dropped out and picked up the icewm trade instead

I majored in all of them so my experience is infinite, graduated from autism university. Dont worry xfce and I3 are good enough, and the ricing uni seems prestigious, but they just cant replicate the feeling of older windows ver. like the OP screenshot. In their case (Chicago 95 again for example) its more like trying to adapt the old themes, not copying them. And that looks...bad, to say the least.

you cannot replicate comfy like this, you can make a cheap replica, a simulacra of this comfy, but you can not replicate it.

what you can do is make your desktop to your liking, and then over time, it will become comfy. this means you might need to work to keep your desktop functional as aspects of it change, or updates break how you want things. but only with such passion and investment can you attain the levels of comfy that you seek.

Did most of this for years and it was pretty comfy, but ultimately decided to abandon it because to be frank all the tweaking often gave me splitting headaches, I fucking hate modern linux. Right now my setup is Windows 7 + Classic theme + FreeCommander + Pale Moon + old media and it's quite cozy I might say, definetely easier on the brain and brings the same homey feeling

Used it for years, only started using 10 in 2024.
Want to go back, but... it seems impossible, now.
How's web browsing, at least?
So much software these days won't work, or just can't be installed anymore, on 7.

It's perfectly viable in 2025 if you don't rely on some very specific software, don't play directx 12 games, and aren't paranoid about security. I almost forget it's unsupported because I have installers for all my stuff on a USB so I don't have to scour through software versions to find out which one still works every time

Haven't had any problems with Firefox ESR 115 so far. If it ever breaks (most certainly by cloudflare), Supermium exists as backup

Older versions of software aren't hard to come by, I don't need the newer features in 95% of cases anyway
