>>611239>Is it possible to learn how to read a foreign language but not understand spoken words?Sure. I can read simple Spanish text ( directions, TV subtitles, easy texts -- not scientific journals or philosophy ), but following the spoken word at times is MUCH more challenging. There's fewer context clues, it's sometimes hard to hear where one word starts and another ends, you can't move at your own pace to decipher it. Plus while written words have fairly strict rules how they're written people pronounce words differently for all sorts of reasons, use slang, and improper grammar. "You ain't nutin' butta hound daaawwwg" sounds OK & makes sense to a native English speaker, but if you're not... :)
