Are retarded people capable of writing sentences? At what IQ level does it become impossible or very hard for somebody to write properly?

I tried to Google this answer but I am absolutely struggling to find a source that will just give me a straight answer instead of treating me to a textbook's worth of politically correct nonsense.

I don't mean a grammatically correct sentence per se. I mean a coherent sentence.

The equivalent of reading ability I am talking about would not be if somebody can read and understand information about an academic topic. I am talking about the writing equivalent of somebody who would be unable to properly read "the dog jumped through the window and landed on the bed."

Essentially, at what IQ level would somebody be incapable of writing the above sentence?

I don't think your question really makes sense. If I have it right, IQ values aren't absolute scores, they show where you stand on the test's median average (IQ 100). In the USA you are legally considered intellectually disabled if you are < 70, i.e. 2 Standard Deviations below the median. This just means about 2% of the population (depending on the SD and extrapolated from the test-takers) are legally retarded, and whether you fall into that category or not.

One of the four components of the WAIS IQ test specifically assesses your Verbal comprehension. Anyone who scores low on that category would probably fit the bill you're interested in, including people such as those with Aspergers who would score very high on Pattern recognition tasks instead. Some papers I've found classify a Verbal Comprehension Index of 85 or lower as a statistically significant weakness from the norm.

An IQ of 55 is extraordinarily low though which is what prompted my question. I also read, on Wikipedia's page on mental retardation that people who are mildly retarded (IQ with 55-69 range) can do basic elementary school math in their adult years. So they are capable of multiplying numbers and dividing them. I was surprised that there was that much of a jump in ability from someone with an IQ of 55 to somebody with an IQ of 65. I would figure there'd be more of a middle ground between being unable to read and being able to multiply numbers.

I don’t know how much it has to do with the level of intelligence. I thought it more influenced by writing skills. For example, I've always had a very hard time writing, although otherwise, everything is quite normal.
