Hey /g/, first time running into an error while booting windows. Just curious, will reinstalling windows on a new SSD keep all of my files safe on my old C:/ drive and keep things running back to normal? I am under the impression that reinstalling windows will format and clear the drive, correct? Halp.

I plan on trying this method once I can borrow a laptop in the next day. But any tips are welcome.

T. Tried updating graphics card and something happened with the GPU i suspect, and now I am getting a 0xc000000f error when I turn on the computer. Happens when GPU is in or out.

yes, as long as there's space, installing without formatting moves [\windows, \users, \program files, etc.] to \windows.old . Don't delete \windows.old in Explorer, \windows.old\windows contains hardlinks, and Windows hardlinks are by-path not by-inode, so deleting it deletes important stuff in \windows . Use the wizard

Boot off a Windows 10 USB, shift-f10 for a command line, look in \windows\inf to see which oemX.inf is the graphics driver, then use PNPUtil to remove it. Then you should be able to boot and use DDU.

That's literally just "you need to run startup repair". The GPU has nothing to do with anything, though if your BCD is getting scribbled you might have a failing hard disk.

Yes, do this. Don't reinstall anything.

No, it only formats if you tell it to, but /g/ likes to tell you to tell it to.

Stupid question, but in what way? I have not had the chance to use the youtube links method, but I have had the original windows CD from when I first built the computer. I tried to run system fix but it would come up with an error saying it is not supported.

It's not getting security updates, modern directx, etc.
If you really don't want the free Windows 10 upgrade, give some thought to buying/pirating extended support.

If I decided to upgrade (if its still free) and install windows 10 on a new SSD that I hooked up, would that fix the issue? And would I be able to reuse my windows 7 key on a future computer if need be?

The game I was updating the drivers for said the issue I was originally having with the game crashing could be directX related. So it might be worth to upgrade, although I don't like the botnet aspect.

If it's retail, then no, you use the windows 7 retail key to activate windows 10, so you can't reuse it on a second windows 7 machine.

If you're not opposed to piracy, then this is the simplest method of getting a windows 10 key for free:
- install clean windows 7
- pirate windows 7 with DAZ loader
- free upgrade to windows 10 using media creation tool or a USB
- windows 10 is now activated on this machine forever
- clean reinstall if you want to, it will activate automatically
- if you want UEFI and Secure Boot, now is the time to switch them on in the BIOS, boot off a USB, wipe the SSD and reinstall

If it's on a sticker on the side of the computer, it's an OEM key and you can't reuse it on another computer anyway.
