You're supposed to take gradual forays into your pain triggers once you've learned enough about pain science and how your nervous system works. Once you change your psychology around it, you can de-sensitize your brain and make it realize that the activity is not harmful. Drawing for example used to make me dizzy just thinking about it. Now it's all I wanna do and I think my nerves responded to it. I was able to do quite a bit before my hand started aggravated, but once it calms down I'm gonna be picking the pen back up.
Though, diving headfirst too hard is not generally a good idea. You'd cause a system shock, and the massive pain you get will just reinforce the idea that doing that activity hurts. It's like starting with small weights and working your way up.
