Sometimes, when I lie in bed and I can faintly feel my heartbeat in my chest, hear it's pulse throught my body, I ponder upon it's sarcous secrets, and the more I seem to think about it, the quieter and more quiet it's mechanism seems to be getting..
Do you think that if one were to focus on the fleshy sound of your own heart long enough, you could accidentally find that forbidden nerve, the giant wind-up mechanism that keeps you alive solely because it's outside of your concious reach - that you could learn to control it, just like one discovers how to move their ears or flex any other tissue..?
Imagine the horror, absolute dread when you realize that the heartbeat you've been always counting on suddenly slips under your control and the captain of it's steering wheel is nowhere to be seen, as if he never even was there to begin with.
