cant go wrong with primary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow) and some complementary colours such as a vibrant green, sienna, burnt umber, black, white, some off-black such as payne's grey...
some kind of thinner (for cleaning your brushes) such as white spirits, turpentine, whatever
medium (linseed oil for example) but you dont really NEED it at first
a bunch of brushes of several shapes and sizes (let your teacher guide you here)
a palette of your liking, I like plastic ones in grey
