I don't think it's much of an exaggeration to say that seeing them is pretty much a spiritual experience; the air just becomes thick with what feels like a fog of overwhelming sound and you'll probably get totally dissociated. Bring earplugs (preferably not those terrible foam ones)! It is SO fucking loud. Every time Thor hit his huge drum it was like someone was choking me. Like, seriously, it forced the air out of my chest.
How are they so fucking good though?! Few 80s bands have had such a consistent string of amazing records, all the while changing up their sound with a constantly rotating lineup. And STILL be able to come back after a break and make what is arguably the best music of their career. And I say that as someone who prefers their no-wave and goth rock stuff.
You're right about the live stuff, We Rose From Your Bed.. is probably one of my favourite Swans albums. And the live version of Coward on Not Here / Not Now is just something else entirely..
