Continuing on it is this ideal subservience, without compulsion, that is the most significant trait difference Rei has from Asuka. While Asuka does show some obedience to authority (Ikari Gendo), it is clear throughout the show that her reasons are entirely selfish. Asuka craves attention and praise from her superiors and when she does not get it (when Misato scolds her) she pouts and cries. Rei on the other hand has no self centered reason to pilot EVA,it is what she was created to do after all. 2/?
