I definitely get what you mean about charcoal. There's something about the smoothness of it and the kind of rythm in which it puts you, both strong and elegant, that is really enjoyable - as opposed to with graphite, where I tend to become too careless if I don't watch myself, since it's more forgiving.
I'd be curious to hear about the kinds you've tried. I've never used charcoal sticks (I have some but never tried), but I have different kinds of charcoal pencils which I sharpen into a long taper, like traditional ateliers do.
My favorite ones might be the Wolff's carbon. The softer grades (4B & 6B) are pretty much considered charcoal pencils to the same league of the more common ones, but the harder grades (B & 2B) feel like a mix between graphite and charcoal. They're very liked I believe but I find them to be pretty unique.
Nothing great, but I got inspired and made a study with them just now. Hopefully it's on-topic enough.
