- I’ll defend the case of Uprising by pointing out she was just a cadet at the time, so it’s not like she had any clout to make things happen on her own. And her talk with Jack is what convinced him to go ahead with the mission, so she /did/ get to further the plot along, and she got top billing in the event itself. It may all be a moot point thanks to Alive, but the fact that it called back to so many elements to the latter and has been offered some references in the time since tells me that it wasn’t just a one-off adventure; it’s a significant entry in her history that will likely be revisited at some point, and hopefully in a way that allows us to get a deeper look at her.
- Blizzard are no strangers to giving preferential treatment to some characters and receiving backlash for it. There’s a chance they’ve learned from their mistakes and are deliberately trying to curtail her presence now so that what they have in store for her will be met more warmly in the future. A lot of her identity is built on her commitment and dedication to the cause, and the story is currently in kind of a nebulous place where things are still coming together. Once the issue of Overwatch’s return hits its stride in earnest, I think her character arc will start taking shape, since she’ll have more of a reason to become more directly involved. And who knows where that could lead? I’m hoping for some kind of personal development arc that has her reconcile her missteps with her worldview in a way that strengthens and tempers her idealism into something purposeful, perhaps even by having her slowly grow out of the role of a follower and into the role of a leader (the aforementioned scene with her and Jack in Uprising /screams/ “foreshadowing” to me). In other words, they’re being stingy and focusing more on her backstory /now/ while things are up in the air so they can be good to her and develop her /later/ when things pick up steam and start to matter.
