Rebuild is a lot more than just mindless robot action flicks, if you think that's what it is then you're too far off the mark to actually understand what you're talking about. The idea of it being masturbatory means that it's also peddling a specific remade version of the original, where everything is tailored to get Anno off.
Anno is quoted as saying that his production is like masturbation. Rebuild is definitely no different.
