You know what's really irritating about long hair Rei?
That's THE perfected Rei. It's Rei I and Rei II combined. She's Rei III, but with all of Rei II's memories and personality intact. It would have been so interesting to explore such a character, especially in a movie format.

Or maybe that whole plotline doesn't exist in the movies and Rei was always Rei. My point stands, a developed Rei would have been an interesting direction for the story and it floundered around until we got a halfassed meta ending that made me wish Anno was working on Godzilla instead.

So I’m the anon from yesterday who saw the movie.

Thought I’d quickly shed my own light on stuff that seems to be being misinterpreted.

Up to you, but that one screenshot is the only moment they’re shown together, and I guess this is down to whether or not two characters talking in a few background frames counts as being a couple suddenly.

She ‘re-integrates’ with Rei II. Its why Rei II is holding the baby-doll towards the end. She inherited Rei Q’s fascination with motherhood from her experiences back on the farm. Rei Q’s AT-field starts to collapse as she reads the hedgehog’s dilemma. Her hand loses cohesion and a warning flashes up on her cuff (hoping for cam screens soon as I didn’t get to read this properly) that says something like “Re-integration Imminent.” She then has a brief painful seizure and see’s flashes of Rei II’s memories from 2.0. The next morning, she goes to say goodbye to Shinji, she accepts that she’s ‘always Ayanami’ we see a flash of Quantum Rei in the distance, she smiles, her plugsuit turns into the white 02 version and her AT field collapses. Leaving a small cross and rainbow behind.

I'd say it's a stretch. Pople are getting this whole scene a bit wrong. Shinji and Mari are looking on at their friends going off to live happy lives. It's the whole theme of 'moving on'. It's left all a bit vague so that the audience (or whoever writes the next instalment in the franchise, whether that's Anno or not) is free to imagine what happens next. Are they all still friends? What do they get up to these days? The scene leaves this all quite open, the main point is to show the characters happy in their last scene together.

Worth pointing out that the main thing that separates these two interpretations in that the scene you shared took place in instrumentality, whereas the scene we're discussing in the sequel is set perhaps some years later.

Asuka's there as well as I recall. I don't see where anyone is getting the Eva world/Real world thing from. It looked very much to me there is only the 'new world' where EVA's have been destroyed, the angels and Adams long since been vanquished, and the world has moved on. The last scene is set years later, it's why the characters look older and Shinji even has a new VA to give him a more mature sounding voice.

Well if that's true then that does significantly change things. Most descriptions I've seen have described a world split, and I thought the leaked subs refereed to it as something of a door opening. I'm much more conflicted about this ending though. Sounds way cornier so not really sure what to think about that.

Yeah it gave me breakfast club vibes with that last scene. The point of instrumentality in this film is Shinji reaching Gendo, and the two reconciling. Shinji then starts fixing the world, sending everyone back down and un coreifying the Earth. He wants to rid the world of EVA so all the evangelion models are destroyed one by one. Mari says "I want to come too!" and ejects into the now blue sea. Lastly Shinji uses the Spear of Infinity or whatever to destroy Unit-01 with himself alongside it (another running misintepretation - Shinji is not 'running away' to a new world he's renewing the world for his friends and is prepared to die to make it possible). However Yui and Gendo, reunited iand in control of Units 01 and 13 take a hold of the spear so they can save their son. Probably the most touching scene in the whole movie as he see's them one last time embracing one another as he hurtles into the new world.

honestly it's kind of embarrassing to admit but while I have always been a Reifag, I wasn't ever really into shipping or anything but I was honestly really moved when I saw the climax of rebuild 2 (I saw it a bit late, just before 3 came out I think) and I felt like the relationship was pretty well earned there. Anno has done nothing but wound me ever since, I feel like I've been played the hardest, it shouldn't matter to me, I probably shouldn't have even liked any of that rebuild shit, but I did and it fucking does

Some other random Rei-related things I remember that I thought I'd just share as they come to me.

It's confirmed in the setting Rei Q is called Ayanami-06, as there's a sign in NERV HQ that says "Ayanami-06: On Assignment".

We briefly see three other Ayanami series clones that according to the script have been "perfected, free from original sin". They're shown sitting naked in a dark room, their faces turned away from us. I assume they're piloting the EVAs 10, 11, and 12 in the following battle with the Wunder.

There is a bunch of lore stuff in this movie from spears to Adams and all other stuff that we'd need a camrip and good translation to analyse. Some things about the Ayanami series are scattered around that I honestly couldn't make much sense of. For example in Instrumentality We see a flashback of Gendo frantically looking at Rei's in tanks whilst shouting Yui's name.

Pic is a screenshot from another thread showing Rei Q's plugsuit turning white as I described before.

There is no explanation he could have given to justify it, unless they actually caved in to the normalfags and said that it could never work out because of Rei's connection to Yui. As it is, that's not even addressed in this movie either, so we're back to the start: what could have possibly justified Shinji and Rei going their own ways, when their development was overwhelmingly and mutually positive throughout the movies? There's no flaws they could bring up to excuse it. No nothing. Samewise, Shinji's feelings couldn't possibly have been summarized by a "suki" when the girl he couldn't save got that, while Rei was the girl he ended the world for.

As it is, we don't even get that apparently. Rei Q does call Shinji "the person I like", but Shinji's feelings for Rei just get swept under a rug.

That they made Rei closer to Yui is not for the benefit of Rei's character or even their relationship, as the theme is never explored once in either 3.0 or 3.0+1.0.
It's simply something to appease Asuka fans with.

I don't think that's true? Rei Q lacked the socialization and exposure to Shinji's kindness for most of her plot existence unlike Rei II and Rei from NGE. Once she was exposed to normal, social life in the village she started learning how to be polite to people, that she cares much for children and wants to be a mother, and that she values herself as Ayanami. At this point all the descriptions I've seen indicate her soul is combined with Rei II's who helps shinji ultimately overcome his father.

Asuka had basically all her major scenes gutted from 2.0 and every side character lost stuff in 1.0 while Rei retained all her important stuff or had it reworked to fit the new plot. He's made two films where Rei is central to Shinji's character and where the quest to give her a happy ending ends up the most important element of the finale (which admittedly is shared with Kaworu) after the protag's own closure.

If this is actually your read of 2.0 you're hopeless. Asuka got shafted hard with 80% of her character arc getting crunched into a loose intriduction followed by suddenly getting given Toji's ending to take her out of the film so the ending can focus on Rei.

3.0 is arguably worse as she's there for the first half of act 1 then gone till the final fight and gets zero development or focus so that Kaworu and Rei Q's relationships can be explored.

It's still unclear but I've been doing some theorising on that point. I think for example that the reason why 3rd Impact was such a mess is because Rei (Lilith's soul) wasn't in the driving seat. Lilith still adopts Rei's appearance, so I think that connection is still solid. Also I think her being in Unit 01 is why Nu-NERV has been in limbo for 14 years - why not proceed with 4th Impact when they have pilots, EAAs, lances and everything else? It's not clear but going by the whole "Advanced Ayanami series" thing, I think that they haven't been able to produce a Rei that can do what they want. They needed to remove her influence to truly make an 'empty vessel.' Remember, they had no interest in retrieving Unit 01 themselves. We retroactively know we were always meant to think she was inside Unit-01.

Just a rough and ready approach to what I think might be happening. We need much more information at this point.

I think it was hinted at in Q and perhaps explained in 3+1.

The method we saw in the TV series did not get the correct results. Rei goes off to do her own thing. They can't get a different girl to use so they have to remove/keep trapped the independent parts of Rei's soul.

Rei Q was an obedient part that is supposed to trigger an Impact the way the manipulators want it done.

Considering how little the TV series explained anything (dummyplugs, the Lance, even LCL which was presented with a few facts but nothing beyond that) and the complete assault of EoE, it is not surprising Rebuild would make up rules as it goes along.

They will move towards her as a person and when their AT-Field collapses, rejoin with her. Let me make an analogy based on what happens to be in front of me right now.

Two decades ago I would buy walnuts that I had to crack a shell open to get to the edible part. Now I can buy walnuts without the shell. I get a "reduced" version that is the same as what I previous was buying.

It is not that I used to have walnuts and now I have pecans.

To put it closer to Rebuild, Anno is now selling the shells instead of the nuts.

And frankly, I'm disappointed in that. That's the "Rei III" Tsurumaki crowed about wanting to do, the one that he pitched a fit about to Anno? First she was a non-character, and then she was retooled into a retread of Rei's development with a dash of farming. In the end, she was nothing but a vehicle to retard the buildup Rei got in 1.0 and 2.0, that can and should have been continued in 3.0 if you wanted a story that respected itself.

What everyone is saying right now, is that this is the most fanficciest shit ever - and that's the whole point of it. Even those who love it are saying it. There's a great japanese review with great insight making the rounds who makes the very point that Rei in this series, esp. Rei Q definitely is not "Rei" as we know her, she's specifically fanwank to suit the needs.

It's honestly really insulting. Even those who didn't quite understand the criticisms that Eva was nothing but Anno masturbating back during the TV series, like me, can see it in the Rebuilds. 4.0 is essentially "What's a happy ending for ME?" with Shinji awkwardly shoved into the role rather than being allowed to remain his own character. I mean, I can believe that Shinji would love an ending like that, we've all seen episode 26, if not the manga ending, and he seems like a happy, if awkward boy if he's removed from the pressures of Eva. But the means to get there, the actual journey of the character, became divorced from the story.

I wish we got to see more of Rei's feisty side. It's clearly there in the TV series, we know this from Rei 1, Unit-00's anger management issues, and Dummy Plug Eva-01. If you stretch it, there's also her attitude in Episode 26's alternate reality. Everybody else acts reasonably in-character, but Rei experiences a massive shift in personality, likely due to never having to experience traumatic soul diffusion or bitches who choke her out for making a snarky remark as a kid.

If you want to go further than that, there's always EoE where she's incapable of showing a friendly face to Shinji. But that's kinda mean so I don't want to.

Even in the simplified Rebuilds, they retained Unit-00's rampage for 1.11 and they didn't say what personality the Dummy Plug is loaded with in 2.22, so it could've still been her. There's a substantial amount of material they could have worked with that could have fleshed out her character in a whole new way.

I have yet to read any evidence that contradicts TV Rei and Rei Q were clones with Q having only a portion of her soul.

If you want to talk about Reis that are not "real" versions of that fictional character top of the list is the How's It Hanging Rei. There were no complaints about her because she was fun and delightful but the entire point of that Rei is that it was not the "real" Rei.

You can add to that video game Rei where for example she works fast food or becomes a scientist or whatever, doujin Reis, fanart Reis, etc.

From the 3.0+1.0 reports, Rebuild is a continuation of the story from the TV series and outside of headcanon, it is pure mental illness to say the TV show reality counts and the Rebuild reality doesn't count.

Not seeing the movie myself I am reluctant to say anything definitive about it, but your comment is weird to me. The issues Anno addressed are universal even if the details are different for every individual. Eva is about learning to be comfortable with yourself and then finding a partner who makes you happiest.

To QuarterSoul, the problem isnt with Rei Q herself, but with Rebuild. Rei Q ended up being the focal point, a characterization of Rei that matched what an Asuka fan would like Rei to be. The character is then inherently unacceptable.

Even if I felt final made Rei Q a honorary Rei, it doesnt change that it is a downgrade. I believe QS was told that no matter what happened, Rei Q would still be Rei Q.

You seem to miss the point bruv. Rei isn't Rei in the Rebuilds, Asuka isn't Asuka, etc - it's all thrown aside. It's one of those times Evangelion becomes genuinely meta. There's even a shot where they get rid of "Evangelion" by literally deleting the model in blender.
So making the comparisons between two works here, in terms of lore, when the lore in the Rebuilds one is thrown out the window, is pointless.
TV Rei is Lilith, 1x immortal soul going through the human condition until she is able to return to true form. There is no soul splits, nothing, the established canon in NGE TV, EoE is hard settled considering that it was said so in ep 23, and the "glossary" books that came with EoE explain that Rei I, Rei II, Rei III have the same soul, and they are only different due to external circumstances.

Rebuild has changed that "settei". Unfortunately in a way which means that they're technically separate, or at least they're able to be split.

It's not that Rei fans aren't able to love a "different" version of Rei, as you yourself point out, other non-canon versions don't work. But Rei Q/Rebuild Rei (Including pokanami!) just doesn't live up to the heroine role Rei had originally. Rei Q represents a bludgeoning hammer to Rei's potential as a character in Rebuild, the "last" Eva show made by Anno.

But QS, I think Rei Q has proven herself to be a good girl. In the Rebuild "version", she is indeed Rei Ayanami or a facet of the "True Rei", that we arguably don't get to see at all in Rebuild.

The answer is that Rei never really was in Rebuild. Just a facet of her.

The only thing you've been right about QuarterSoul, are the things no one challenged - that the Rebuilds had reduced Rei's stature and status in the Rebuilds by turning her into a multiple-personality-individual set of clones. But they can all be connected at the base of which they once stood.

You're simply being self-contradictory again here. If the point being made is that Rei has been reduced, which is indeed an attack on Rei's original stature - because TV Rei was "too powerful" - then you're agreeing with us.
The result for some fans may be hurt feelings that they're told that "Rei was too good", for others it may just be an observation. But you gotta respect that for those that love Rei, that's how it'll feel. Like an attack.

I am confident that is not an accurate translation of a quote of anything Anno has ever said.

Rei doesn't even pilot an Evangelion in the final movie, whilst Asuka is just piled on with action/battle/outfit/merchandising goodness.

It should never have been controversial to begin with, becasue Tsurumaki outright says so in the 2.0 CRC, where he says he wants Asuka to have a film heroine role, and he wants Rei dead lol.
The side effect is that Rei has an actual character and Asuka does not, and with no shipping, Asucucks are seething due to them actually expecting Asushin.

It simply proves what Reifags have been saying about Asuka fans all along. They were just self-inserters who wanted to get to Asuka through Shinji. Even with all the powerups in the world, all the pandering, they just care about asushin as it is the cornerstone for asuka fans.

Tsurumaki is an Asukfag. In theory, that's different from an Asushin fag. Tsurumaki, Anno, are NOT Asushinfags.
But, as we've always said, there are no real Asukafags. They just love the idea of an ideal waifu they can self-insert with. They NEVER cared about Soryu.
They NEVER cared about helping Asuka. Which is why they don't give a shit about Asuka literally getting the help she needs in FINAL.
Rebuild provides Asuka fanservice, but not Asushin fanservice.

Asuka in NGE was a puppet that got replaced in episode 22.
She had no powers, no nothing, she was just an object NERV used. Asuka fans hated this part about Asuka, since they wanted
her to be special and competent.

In Rebuild, they create a new Asuka which is actually useful beyond dying as cannon fodder, one that might have a spark of self-actualization. Now add in super powers, special abilities, tons of mecha and many new plugsuits, and you've got tons of new stuff.
It's all shallow yes, but it took Asuka fans 15 years to notice. Now that it's over, they seethe.

Rei didn't need a savior in NGE/EoE, she was the savior. In the Rebuilds however, she needs a savior, as she's become the ultimate damsel in distress who exists to be put in peril and die over and over again to evoke an emotional response from the protagonist.

Nobody is invunerable, not even Rei. Rei didn't need to be saved by a spirit guide or mentor. Being physically in distress is just raising the stakes at the moment without commenting on Rei's beliefs or goals.
