I think they use 35mm, and they require a little patience, but you get those neat "toy camera" effects with them.
The only issue is film development. There are few places that still do it, and I'm not sure how much it costs off the top of my head.
If you're serious, you could get an refurbished TLR for around $100 in decent condition, or a brand new Lubitel for $200-$300.
