In Rebuild, they create a new Asuka which is actually useful beyond dying as cannon fodder, one that might have a spark of self-actualization. Now add in super powers, special abilities, tons of mecha and many new plugsuits, and you've got tons of new stuff.
It's all shallow yes, but it took Asuka fans 15 years to notice. Now that it's over, they seethe.
